Took two granddaughters to 4-D movie Polar Express. They loved it as did the three adults. Ate aa decent lunch there. Then spent 1 and a half hours touring the museum. The 5 and 3 year olds had a great time with all the interactive exhibits and child specific activities. They didn't want to leave. The gift store is excellent with all the South Carolina specific gifts. Overall an outstanding holiday treat. I highly recommend a trip.
I've been in love with the museum since it opened. I was 14 then and have now passed that love to our 3 year old daughter.
As a South Carolina native, I have been to the SC State Museum countless times, but with each visit I discover something new. This museum provides a wonderful and comprehensive history of South Carolina. Visitors get to experience hundreds of interactive exhibits detailing the history of the State we proudly call home and beyond. Get answers to questions such as "why is there so much sand in Lexington?" To "what is the significance behind the Palmetto Tree?" and much, much more. We love the state museum and hope you enjoy your visit as much as our family has.
I can't wait to go back.
As for the activity surrounding the eclipse itself, the museum certainly outdid itself and its peers. Not only did they arrange for an orderly and extremely pleasant that was neither too crowded nor too expensive, they also had exhibits from NASA and a local astronaut hero who spoke to the crowd before the full eclipse. They arranged for delicious local catering provided water and glasses to all attendees.
This is our second visit to the museum in about 4 years. This time we had a science/stem presentation and a visit in the planetarium. We enjoy the Confederate Relic Room but didn't visit it this time. The presentation was very interesting and they did a great job of keeping our group engaged (not easy when the kids range from 2-15 years old!). The new(er) exhibits were great, with a lot of interactive information. Plan for plenty of time for all 4 floors! So much to see, learn, read, and play with. There are also a cafe to buy lunch or snacks, a 4D Experience Theater, and laser shows to make it a full day visit.
This was our first visit to Columbia and this Museum certainly makes us want to come back. We started the day off exploring the art exhibits and the geologic history exhibits. We are especially Amazed by the Savage Seas exhibit, which shows some of the amazing prehistoric life of the Inland shallow American sea during the period about 80 million years ago. This exhibit had full skeletons of a huge variety of animals that lived at this time in quite life-like positioning.
We had a wonderful experience at the Museum during the total solar eclipse on August 21st. Both the coordination of the event and the Excellence of the museum itself made a lasting impression on both me and my children.
